SJB councillor Nikini Ayodhya has decided to step down from politics after a heated exchange with S.J.M. Jayaratne, Chairman of the Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha, following the rejection of the local council’s budget yesterday. She plans to submit her resignation to the Party Leader.
The incident occurred after tensions flared during the council meeting, prompting Ayodhya to file a complaint with the police.
Speaking to the media, Chairman Jayaratne, an NPP councillor, acknowledged his behavior and cited pressure at the time. “I spoke a bit harshly. I also believe she is unsuitable to be a councillor. I am under immense pressure,” he said.
Ayodhya, meanwhile, expressed her decision to leave politics, stating that the incident has left her disillusioned with local governance.
