A hotel employee has been taken into custody by the Colombo Fort Police following a complaint by a Dutch tourist over the theft of foreign currency from her wallet.
According to police, the incident occurred on the evening of 11 November 2025. The tourist, who was staying with another woman in a special guest room at a hotel within the Colombo Fort Police Division, discovered that Dirhams and Euros totaling approximately Rs. 330,000 in local currency were missing. The complaint was officially lodged on 13 November 2025.
Prompted by the report through the Tourist Police, Colombo Fort officers quickly initiated investigations, leading to the arrest of a 41-year-old suspect from Kandana, who was employed at the hotel. During questioning, the suspect admitted to taking the money while the guests were out of the room and transferring the stolen funds via a financial institution in Ja-Ela.
The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today, while further investigations continue.
