The Police Tourism Division has arrested a three-wheeler driver accused of defrauding a Nepalese woman tourist by charging her Rs. 30,000 for a taxi ride.

Police said the complaint was lodged on October 25, 2025, following which the Tourism Division launched an investigation based on the suspect’s description and vehicle details.

After nearly two weeks of inquiries, officers on motorcycle patrol managed to locate and arrest the suspect on November 11. He was later handed over to the Kompannaweediya Police for further legal action.

Police also revealed that two other individuals from Imbulgoda and Wellampitiya had previously been arrested for overcharging two foreign women from Brazil and Belgium, demanding Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 30,000 respectively for similar rides.

Authorities have urged all transport and tourism service providers to act responsibly and refrain from exploiting foreign visitors, warning that such incidents tarnish Sri Lanka’s reputation as a tourist-friendly destination.
