Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the professionalism of journalism in Sri Lanka, highlighting the urgent need for a new code of media ethics that reflects modern challenges and responsibilities.
Addressing the Presidential Media Awards Ceremony 2025 held at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre, Colombo, the Prime Minister stated that the government’s vision is to create a humanitarian and responsible media industry, recognizing the media space as a public asset and common property.
“We, as a government, are committed to strengthening the professionalism of journalism. There is a clear need for a new code of ethics that reflects the evolving responsibilities of the media. Our goal is to build a more humanistic media industry, one that recognizes media space as a public asset and a shared responsibility,” she said.
The Prime Minister further emphasized that the government deeply respects and honors journalists who uphold independence, impartiality, and excellence in their service to the public.
The Presidential Media Awards Ceremony 2025 was organized to appreciate outstanding achievements and contributions made by journalists across the country, promoting integrity and professionalism within the media sector.
