Speaking at a special media briefing held today (11) at the Police Media Division Auditorium in Suhurupaya, Battaramulla, he warned that such posts could provide useful information to criminals, including those targeting homes left unattended.
He noted that during the festive season, many families travel away from home, and publicly announcing their whereabouts could alert potential offenders.
“This practice of uploading selfies saying you are in Nuwara Eliya, Galle or Kataragama is not appropriate. It could be an advantage to someone who is tracking you or your home. Therefore, we strongly advise parents and families not to reveal their movements on social media,” he said.
ASP Wootler further emphasized the importance of selecting a safe and reliable mode of transport when organizing trips, especially school excursions.
He advised the public to ensure the vehicle and driver are properly vetted, well-maintained, and trustworthy before traveling.
