A tense situation arose in Parliament today when MP Dayasiri Jayasekera questioned the government over the ongoing crisis at several economic centres, claiming that trading activities have come to a complete halt. He said farmers and traders were deeply affected as buying and selling had stopped in key markets.
Responding to the query, Minister of Trade Wasantha Samarasinghe stated that the government has already initiated measures to address the concerns of farmers, particularly those cultivating potatoes and onions.
However, Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake said that MPs should refrain from disrupting the decorum of the House when raising questions, which led to heated arguments across the chamber.
Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne then advised MP Jayasekera to submit an adjournment motion if he wished to further debate the matter relating to the crisis at economic centres.
