World Keratoconus Day, observed globally on November 10 each year, was commemorated in Sri Lanka for the first time today (10).

To mark the occasion, a special media briefing aimed at raising public awareness about keratoconus was held this morning at the auditorium of the National Eye Hospital in Colombo.

World Keratoconus Day was first designated as an international observance in 2016. This year’s event marks the inaugural celebration of the day in Sri Lanka.

Keratoconus is an eye condition that affects the cornea — the transparent, dome-shaped front part of the eye. In this condition, the cornea gradually thins and bulges outward into a cone shape, distorting vision.

Health experts emphasize that early detection of keratoconus is crucial for effective management. Individuals experiencing visual distortions or unexplained blurring are advised to undergo an eye examination without delay.
