Prime Minister and Minister of Education Harini Amarasuriya announced that discussions are currently underway to introduce an age-appropriate sex education programme in Sri Lankan schools aimed at reducing incidents of child sexual abuse.

Speaking at a public event, the Prime Minister expressed concern over the rising number of child sexual abuse cases in the country and emphasized the importance of educating children on how to protect themselves.

According to Miss Amarasuriya, the proposed programme is being developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Family Health Bureau, and the National Child Protection Authority. These institutions have collectively recommended that sex education be integrated into the national school curriculum.

She further stated that consultations with education and child protection experts are ongoing to determine the most suitable content and methods for implementation, ensuring that the lessons are appropriate to each age group and aligned with broader health education goals.

The initiative is expected to mark a significant step toward promoting child safety and awareness within the country’s education system.
