Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has sharply criticized the 2026 budget, describing it as a “bag of lies” and claiming there is a disconnect between the government’s promises and the proposals presented.

Speaking at the opening of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB) Horana main party office, Premadasa urged the public to examine whether President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s campaign pledges and policies for “a rich country, a beautiful life” are reflected in the latest budget.

“The government is following the Goebbels theory, spreading falsehoods in society to maintain continuous power,” Premadasa said. He added that the budget lacks a concrete program or vision to address poverty, which affects 40%–50% of the population, and noted that living standards have yet to return to pre-2022 levels or even to those of 2019.

The Opposition Leader also accused the government of misleading the public by claiming readiness for a new IMF agreement while merely approving the former president’s IMF deal.
