In Police RTM 115, issued on Wednesday (5), the IGP expressed concern over the uncontrolled circulation of such material, noting that it has begun to undermine ongoing investigations and court proceedings.
The directive comes after several widely circulated videos on social media, including footage of the suspect arrested over the murder of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekera, sparked criticism over Police conduct and procedure.
Citing existing guidelines under RTM 268 and 896, the IGP stated that if visual documentation is necessary, the relevant Police division must appoint a designated officer to record the material and forward it to the Police Media Spokesperson, along with a written description.
He also warned against the growing practice of Police officers allowing mainstream media personnel to accompany them during operations, saying unregulated filming could jeopardize the integrity of criminal investigations.
The Police leadership and all Officers-in-Charge have been instructed to strictly adhere to the new procedure.
