Diplomatic discussions have commenced to repatriate the fishermen and the vessel detained in Maldivian waters on suspicion of transporting narcotics.

Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala said that the process is being carried out with the involvement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, adding that an official communication regarding the matter has already been sent to the Maldivian government.

The fishermen were taken into custody along with the vessel after Maldivian authorities reportedly discovered approximately 300 kilograms of heroin onboard.

Local authorities have initiated investigations to identify the individual or group responsible for the drug consignment. Meanwhile, several Sri Lankan officers are scheduled to travel to the Maldives to assist in further investigations and to facilitate diplomatic procedures related to the incident.
