Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala informed Parliament today (08) that seven police divisions have been identified where organized crime groups and gang violence are notably active.

He said these divisions are located across the Western and Southern Provinces.

In the Western Province, Colombo North, Nugegoda, and Gampaha have been identified, while Elpitiya, Tangalle, Galle, and Matara fall under the Southern Province.

The Minister made these remarks in response to a question raised by MP Rajeevan Jeyachandamoorthy.

Minister Wijepala further stated that intelligence units and undercover operatives are actively gathering information related to criminal networks, and that ongoing investigations aim to dismantle such groups. He added that special operations are being carried out to apprehend wanted criminals and leaders of underworld gangs.

Additional police personnel have been deployed in the affected areas, while special motorcycle patrol teams have been introduced to intercept fleeing suspects. The Minister also noted that random search operations and property investigations are underway, with legal action to be taken against illegally acquired assets linked to organized crime and drug trafficking.

Responding to a query regarding a recent rise of gang activity in Jaffna, the Minister said that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and conducting necessary investigations to curb criminal resurgence in the region.
