The 16th National Cyber Security Summit of Sri Lanka is scheduled to be held on November 12 at Waters Edge Hotel, Battaramulla, under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, according to State Minister of Digital Economy, Eng. Eranga Weeraratne.

Speaking at a media briefing held today (6) at the Department of Government Information, the State Minister said that this year’s summit will be held under the theme “Creating a More Trusted Cybersecurity Environment for Sri Lanka.”

The event is jointly organized by the Ministry of Digital Economy and the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (Sri Lanka CERT). Over 400 participants including local and international representatives, policymakers, IT professionals, scientists, technologists, government and private sector officials, business leaders, NGO members, and university delegates are expected to take part.

Highlighting the importance of the summit, the State Minister emphasized that digitalization remains one of the key priorities of the government. He noted that a significant number of public services are being digitized and that the government is taking swift steps to strengthen the digital industry.

He also pointed out that payment services through GOV PAY have been successfully implemented and that new technologies such as the Digital ID, Digital Driver’s License, and QR-based payment systems are being introduced. The Minister stressed the importance of ensuring the security of these systems, as they handle sensitive data, and reaffirmed that both government and relevant institutions bear the responsibility of safeguarding them.

He further noted that maintaining public trust in digital services and ensuring uninterrupted access require robust cybersecurity measures.

The State Minister added that international summits of this nature provide valuable opportunities to bring global knowledge to Sri Lanka while enabling local experts to share their skills and innovations with the world.

He also revealed that a National Data Protection Act is expected to be presented soon, paving the way for the establishment of a Data Protection Authority in the near future.
