Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has called on the government to act without political bias in its efforts to eradicate the growing drug menace in the country.
Speaking on the recent arrest of a school principal and his wife—both said to be affiliated with the National People’s Power (NPP) Teachers’ Union—over alleged possession of drugs, Rajapaksa claimed that the incident raises serious concerns about drug distribution among schoolchildren.
“The government, which in the past accused the Rajapaksas of being linked to every drug case, must now explain who they are blaming this time,” the MP said.
He urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, ensuring that not only the suspects but also any politicians connected to the case are held accountable.
Rajapaksa further stressed that Sri Lanka’s battle against drugs will only succeed if political representatives at all levels—including the 159 MPs and local council members—stop engaging in the drug trade and focus on implementing the country’s budgetary and development proposals.
He warned that unless firm and impartial measures are taken, the decline of public trust and social stability “cannot be reversed.”
