The government’s latest initiative to supply locally manufactured school shoes to students is expected to give a significant boost to Sri Lanka’s footwear industry, while replacing the existing school shoe voucher system, Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunnetti said.
Speaking at a discussion held at the Ministry today, the Minister said the pilot project will initially cover 1,266 schools with fewer than 250 students in the Western and Southern Provinces, benefiting 145,723 students.
He explained that the decision not only ensures quality footwear for children but also strengthens domestic production by engaging local shoe manufacturers registered under the Ministry of Industries.
“Local manufacturers have agreed to produce school shoes of high quality, offering a one-year warranty and pricing them at just Rs. 2,100 per pair,” Minister Handunnetti said. “This model will help save around Rs. 140 million, funds which can then be redirected to provide shoes for an additional 62,481 students.”
As part of the program, manufacturers will directly visit schools to measure students’ foot sizes to ensure proper fitting and comfort.
Officials said the initiative is part of the government’s wider strategy to empower local small and medium-scale industries, reduce import dependency, and promote sustainable local manufacturing.
If successful, the project could be expanded nationwide in the coming years, aligning with the government’s “Made in Sri Lanka” development drive.
