The election to appoint the new Diyawadana Nilame the lay custodian of the Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is scheduled to take place today (07) at the Senkadagala Buddhist Headquarters in Kandy.
The event will be held under the supervision of the Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs. A total of around 267 eligible officials, including members of the Maha Sangha, are entitled to cast their votes to elect the new Diyawadana Nilame.
Since the Kandyan Kingdom came under British rule, 19 individuals have served in this esteemed position. The newly appointed Diyawadana Nilame will serve until 2035, in accordance with the Buddhist Temporalities Ordinance.
