Anguruwathota police have arrested a Chivaradhari (novice monk) accused of abusing three school-age boys. The abuse came to light when one of the students was absent from school for an entire week.
Concerned by the absence, the class teacher informed the principal, and the incident was revealed when the child returned to school the following week. According to the children, the suspect would wait near the school in a car, lure the children away with money, abuse them, and return them before school reopened. On one occasion, two children were abused simultaneously.
After the principal informed the police, a detailed investigation was conducted. When questioned, the children’s parents expressed no prior knowledge, believing their children were attending school normally.
Further inquiry uncovered that the monk had been giving money to the children and other novice monks at the temple, who in turn were spending around fifty thousand rupees monthly on items like decorative goods and chocolates from local shops.
The accused monk is scheduled to appear before the Horana Magistrate's Court following his arrest by Anguruwathota police.
