The Department of Meteorology has issued an ‘Amber’ advisory warning of severe lightning in several parts of the country.

According to the advisory, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in several areas of the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, and Uva Provinces. The department further cautioned that temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thundershowers.

The public has been urged to take necessary precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity. Authorities advise residents to seek shelter indoors and avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and open water bodies during thunderstorms.

People are also reminded to refrain from using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances, and to avoid open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors, and boats during periods of lightning.

Additionally, the public is advised to be cautious of fallen trees and power lines, and to contact local disaster management authorities for any emergency assistance.
