The councillor, Disna Niranjala Kumari, who was elected at the last local government election, stated that she was deeply distressed by the incident and had made the decision to step down on personal and ethical grounds.
According to police reports, the two suspects remain in custody, while further legal proceedings are currently underway.
In her resignation letter to the Gampaha District Returning Officer, with a copy sent to the NPP General Secretary, Kumari said she wished to support the ongoing legal process. She further noted that her decision was intended to uphold the party’s commitment to clean and accountable politics.
