The deceased has been identified as Caitlin Jullie Clarke (55), who was staying at a rented house on a three-month tourist visa.
Police said she had returned from a trip to Sigiriya the previous day and suspect that she may have been a drug addict.
The body has been sent to the Kandy National Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
