Sri Lanka stands to lose USD 70 million in potential debt relief from its Governance-Linked Bond (GLB) due to a fiscal planning oversight, Verité Research has cautioned.

The independent think tank said that while the Government’s revenue forecasts for 2026 and 2027 are in line with the latest IMF projections, they fall slightly short of the revenue levels required to unlock the GLB-linked debt relief.

According to Verité Research, the Government has projected revenue at 15.2% and 15.3% of GDP for 2026 and 2027, respectively—just below the GLB thresholds of 15.3% and 15.4%.

The organisation warned that even this small shortfall could cost the country the USD 70 million benefit, highlighting the importance of more precise and ambitious fiscal planning to secure the full extent of available debt relief.
