The Police Life Saving Division said that 230 people have died due to drowning during the past year, with the majority of victims being youths.

The division further stated that its officers were able to rescue 195 individuals from drowning-related incidents during the same period. Among those rescued, 135 were local residents, while 60 were foreign nationals.

Meanwhile, a tragic drowning incident was reported yesterday (05) in the Deduru Oya in Chilaw, where five youths lost their lives while bathing. According to police, the victims were residents of the Makola area in Kiribathgoda and had been part of a group that had traveled to Chilaw on a leisure trip.

Two of the deceased are reported to be under the age of 16.

The Police Life Saving Division once again urged the public to exercise extreme caution when bathing in rivers, reservoirs, and coastal areas, especially in locations without lifeguard supervision.
