The Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs has initiated a special rehabilitation and awareness programme in response to the growing number of women becoming addicted to drugs in Colombo and surrounding areas.
Minister Saroja Savitri Paulraj said the Ministry is developing a targeted plan to support affected women and prevent further escalation of the issue. The initiative will include counselling, community outreach, and rehabilitation services, with a focus on young women and mothers.
According to data from the Police, Drug Prevention Units, and the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, the use of methamphetamine (ice), pills, alcohol, and cigarettes among women has increased sharply in recent months.
The Minister also highlighted the serious risks of drug use during pregnancy, warning that it can harm the physical and intellectual development of unborn children. She stressed that coordinated efforts between health and social service agencies are crucial to protect vulnerable groups and promote long-term recovery
