Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, Dr. Susil Ranasinghe, said that there are currently around 900,000 homeless families across the country. He further noted that approximately 100,000 new families join this category every year, highlighting the rising demand for affordable and accessible housing.

According to the Minister, the government has already launched several programs aimed at enabling low-income families to obtain houses or residential land. These include housing loan schemes, concessionary grants, and settlement support projects.

Dr. Ranasinghe added that steps will be taken to expand the existing housing assistance programs, particularly to support families who are financially unable to build their own homes.
