In line with the World Tsunami Awareness Day, the Indian Ocean Tsunami Exercise (IOWave) is scheduled to take place tomorrow (Nov. 5) at 8:30 a.m., focusing on four districts — Batticaloa, Galle, Jaffna, and Kalutara, according to Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Director General, Retired Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda.

Speaking at a special media briefing held today (Nov. 4) at the Department of Government Information, he emphasized that the exercise is a simulation drill only, urging the public not to panic.

The drill will be carried out in five selected Grama Niladhari divisions within the identified districts. However, Kotuwegoda noted that if an actual tsunami situation arises on the same day, the exercise would be immediately halted, and the official national tsunami alert and response mechanisms would be activated to guide the public to safe locations.

He further stated that the exercise, conducted in accordance with UNESCO guidelines, will be observed by two international monitors. Kotuwegoda described Sri Lanka’s recognition as a “Tsunami Ready” nation as a major achievement for the country.

A total of 28 countries in the Indian Ocean region will participate in this exercise, which will simulate Sri Lanka’s response to a tsunami originating near the Sumatra region.

Public awareness programs have already been conducted in the participating areas. No road closures will occur during the drill, and the police will ensure smooth traffic flow to prevent unnecessary congestion.

The main objectives of the exercise are to test and strengthen national tsunami early warning and communication systems, validate standard operating procedures (SOPs), and enhance preparedness among communities and first responders, the DMC Director General added.
