Professor Asitha de Zoysa, Director of the Clinical Research Unit, said at a media briefing that the study began ten years ago with the goal of combining three commonly used blood pressure medications into a single tablet.
“While no drug can completely cure high blood pressure, this new medication can effectively manage it,” Professor de Zoysa explained. “It allows patients to take just one tablet a day and has shown an 88% success rate in controlling high blood pressure.”
The research was completed in 2024, and its findings were submitted to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA approved the drug in June, while the WHO included it in its Essential Medicines List in September this year.
Professor de Zoysa added that maintaining close control of high blood pressure with this drug could lower the risk of stroke by up to 60%, marking a major advancement in cardiovascular treatment.
