The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to allow the recruitment of women for key operational positions in the Sri Lanka Railways Department for the first time in its 165-year history.

Until now, only men have been recruited for positions such as Railway Engine Driver, Train Controller, and Station Master, while women were appointed as Supervisory Managers only in 2012 and 2015.

The decision aligns with the government’s new economic policies, which aim to promote gender equality and provide women with opportunities in public sector roles traditionally reserved for men.

Accordingly, the Cabinet has granted policy approval to recruit female officers for the positions of Railway Engine Driver, Railway Superintendent, Station Master, and Railway Supervisory Manager, under the powers vested in it by Article 55 (1) of the Constitution of Sri Lanka.
