Three wind power projects have been planned on Mannar Island, identified as a region with high wind power potential, according to the island’s renewable energy resource development plan.

Of these, the Thambapavani Wind Power Plant began operations in 2021, while two more projects — the 20-megawatt Windscape Mannar (Pvt) Ltd project and the 50-megawatt Hayleys Fentons project — are scheduled to commence in December 2025 and December 2026, respectively.

However, considering the environmental and social concerns raised by residents, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed authorities not to proceed with the remaining wind power projects without the consent of the people living on Mannar Island.

The Cabinet of Ministers has agreed to act accordingly, following a briefing from the Minister of Power and Energy on the President’s directive.
