Sri Lankan LGBTQ rights activist Chanu Nimesha has filed a complaint with Police Headquarters, alleging that hate speech targeting the LGBTQ community has been spreading through several media outlets.

Speaking to reporters, Nimesha said that certain individuals and groups were attempting to attack the LGBTQ community through false and hateful narratives.

“They have nothing else to talk about, so they are now targeting the LGBTQ community with smear campaigns. We are ordinary people — we don’t need to wear a label to prove who we are,” Nimesha said.

The activist stressed that the community seeks only to live freely and without discrimination.
