The Eastern Terminal jetty has been extended to 700 metres, with plans to further expand it to 1,000 metres, a move expected to enhance port operations and strengthen the national economy.

The announcement was made at the 26th Delegates' Conference held today at the Colombo Fort Ex-Servicemen's Association Hall, under the patronage of Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Anura Karunathilake and Deputy Minister Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku.

Officials highlighted that the expanded jetty will support fully automated container operations, improving efficiency, reducing turnaround times, and increasing the port’s capacity to handle larger shipments.

The initiative is also aimed at streamlining operations, minimizing irregularities, and boosting transparency to support economic growth.

The conference carried the theme: “Let's Build Ports to Strengthen the National Economy.”
