Parliamentary sources say that employees of the Parliament of Sri Lanka are preparing to launch trade union action during the upcoming budget period.

The move comes in protest against a committee report on the restructuring of the Parliament’s administrative system, which has reportedly been forwarded to the heads of parliamentary departments for further review.

Employees have expressed strong opposition to several recommendations contained in the report, sources said.

There are nine departments functioning under the Parliament, employing around 850 staff members. It is reported that the employees have already reached an informal agreement to proceed with the planned trade union action, which is expected to coincide with the presentation and debate of the national budget.
