A first-year student of the Faculty of Information Technology at the University of Vavuniya has died following a sudden illness that occurred on the night of October 31.

The deceased has been identified as 23-year-old T.M.S. Nirmal Wickramadasa, a resident of Jayasiripura, Anuradhapura. According to the Puwarasankulam Police, the student died while receiving treatment at the hospital, and investigations have revealed that a significant level of alcohol was present in his body at the time of death.

However, the student’s relatives have alleged that his death was linked to a “strange incident” involving senior students. His sister claimed that senior students had forcibly made him consume alcohol during a university party on the night of the 31st. She further stated that her brother had previously shared concerns about misconduct and pressure from senior students.

When contacted, a doctor at the Vavuniya Base Hospital declined to comment, stating that information regarding the incident could not be provided to the media.

Police investigations into the death are ongoing.
