A soldier attached to the 22 Infantry Division Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Army in Trincomalee has died after being shot while being taken to hospital this morning (01), according to Trincomalee Headquarters Police.
The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old G.G.A. Chinthaka Prasanna Karunaratne, a resident of Kotuhena, Manduragoda, Kurunegala.
Police said the soldier had sustained gunshot injuries from his own service firearm, and preliminary investigations revealed the incident may have been a suicide.
The Trincomalee Headquarters Police have launched further investigations, while the motive behind the suspected suicide has not yet been determined.
