A 58-year-old woman from Kalegana, Galle, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of heroin trafficking by the Galle High Court today (31).
The verdict was delivered by High Court Judge Purnima Paranamana, following a lengthy trial related to the woman’s arrest 11 years ago.
The accused was taken into custody on 9 May 2014 by officers of the Galle Anti-Corruption Unit, who seized 9 grams and 18 milligrams of heroin during a raid conducted on information received about her involvement in large-scale drug trafficking.
After the initial hearing at the Galle Magistrate’s Court, the Attorney General filed indictments before the Galle High Court on 12 January 2015, under two charges — trafficking and possession of heroin.
Our court reporter said the prosecution succeeded in proving one of the two charges beyond reasonable doubt.
Accordingly, the Galle High Court sentenced the accused to life imprisonment.
