The National Lotteries Board (NLB) has announced that it will initiate strict legal action against several district agents including the wife of MP Hesha Vithanage and the sister-in-law of former Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam — over alleged defaults totaling more than Rs. 12 million in lottery ticket sales.

Speaking at a press briefing held yesterday (Oct. 29) at the Peace Center in Colombo, NLB Chairman M.D.C.A. Perera revealed that a number of agents, appointed based on recommendations from former ministers such as Duminda Dissanayake and Navin Dissanayake, have also failed to settle substantial dues.

Mr.Perera disclosed that a sales agent in Kuliyapitiya, recommended in 2016 by former Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, has defaulted on Rs. 9,878,000. “Under the Public Property Act, even a non-payment of Rs.100,000 requires a complaint to be filed with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID),” he noted.

He further stated that Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Nandani, recommended by MP Hesha Vithanage, has failed to pay Rs. 2.1 million despite repeated reminders. The Fraud Investigation Division is currently probing the matter.

Other reported defaulters include K.D. Dharmapala, who owes Rs. 2,370,000 and was recommended by Duminda Dissanayake, and D.J. Perera, who defaulted Rs. 609,000 after being appointed on the recommendation of Navin Dissanayake in 2011.

Mr.Perera emphasized that the NLB will take all necessary legal measures to recover the outstanding amounts and ensure accountability from all responsible parties.
