Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today granted bail to Neville Wanniarachchi, the former security officer of ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who had been in remand custody on suspicion of unlawfully acquiring assets and properties worth Rs. 28 million.

Wanniarachchi was released on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 along with two sureties of Rs. 1 million each.

The court granted bail after rejecting a request by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) to further remand the suspect, noting that no new facts had emerged from the additional report to justify continued detention.
