A Sri Lankan fishing vessel operating about 350 nautical miles southeast of the island has met with disaster, resulting in the death of one fisherman and the disappearance of another, the Sri Lanka Navy confirmed.

Navy spokesperson Commander Buddika Samapath said one fisherman drowned while another remains missing. Survivors reported that the deceased’s body was released into the sea following the incident.

At the time of the tragedy, six fishermen were aboard. Four survivors were rescued by an Indonesian fishing vessel and later transferred to a merchant ship now heading toward Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Navy Ship Sindurala is currently moving to intercept the merchant ship to ensure the safe return of the rescued fishermen.
