The National Audit Office has revealed that a sum exceeding Rs. 1,277 million is recoverable by the government from medical officers who have left public service.

According to the report, as of October 31, 2024, the total amount owed to the government by these officers including bonds, penalties, and outstanding loan balances amounts to Rs. 1,277 million.

This was disclosed through a special audit report prepared by the National Audit Office on the recovery of dues from medical officers who have resigned from service and on the placement of specialist doctors who received overseas training.

The Audit Office further notes that there is a significant increase in the number of medical officers leaving public service due to various reasons, including postgraduate studies, overseas employment, and other personal factors.
