Crew members of the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) ship Akebono, currently in Sri Lanka on a goodwill visit, joined the Sri Lanka Navy in a beach cleaning initiative at Galle Face on Tuesday (29).
The programme was organised in support of the national “Clean Sri Lanka” campaign, under the theme “A Beautiful Beach – An Attractive Tourist Destination.” The collaborative effort focused on removing plastic, polythene, and other solid waste, contributing to the restoration of the popular coastal stretch.
The Sri Lanka Navy continues to play a leading role in environmental stewardship, with regular initiatives aimed at preserving marine and coastal ecosystems. The participation of JMSDF personnel further strengthens the ongoing cooperation between the two nations beyond maritime security.
Commander Takayuki Kubo, Defence Attaché of the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka, also attended the event, underscoring Japan’s continued partnership with Sri Lanka on environmental and maritime affairs.
