The Cabinet has approved the submission of new regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act, making it compulsory for all passengers travelling on expressways to wear seat belts, for Parliament’s approval.

The proposal, submitted by the Acting Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, was approved with the aim of reducing deaths and serious injuries caused by the rising number of accidents on expressways.

According to the amended Motor Vehicles (Expressways) Regulations, No. 2 of 2011, issued under the Motor Vehicles Act (Chapter 203) through Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2455/29 dated September 25, 2025, the rule makes it mandatory for seat belts to be worn by passengers in all seats of vehicles using expressways.
