The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) said that it has received 414 complaints related to the sexual abuse of children during the first nine months of this year.
Of these, 192 complaints were categorized as serious sexual abuse cases.
According to the NCPA, a total of 7,677 complaints were received between January 1 and September 30, 2025. Out of these, 6,296 complaints were related to the National Child Protection Authority Act, while 1,381 complaints were not covered under the Act.
The highest number of complaints was reported in September, with 1,176 cases.
Among the complaints received under the NCPA Act, 49 were related to rape, 111 to child labor, and 203 to child begging.
Meanwhile, among the complaints outside the NCPA Act, 62 cases involved teenage pregnancies, 102 cases involved cyberbullying, 38 cases involved domestic violence, 13 involved attempted suicide, and one case involved abortion.
The authority further reported 83 complaints related to drug offences, including 27 cases where children were used for drug transportation and 3 cases involving drug trafficking to minors under 16 years of age.
Meanwhile, Kalutara District DIG Jayantha Padmini Weerasuriya said there is a growing trend of children becoming inclined towards drug use, highlighting the need for stronger awareness and preventive measures.
