Landslide early warning updated due to ongoing heavy rain

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has updated the landslide early warning issued earlier in light of the prevailing heavy rainfall across several parts of the country.

According to the NBRO, the updated warning will remain in effect for 24 hours from 4:00 p.m. today (October 27) until 4:00 p.m. tomorrow (October 28) covering specific areas that are considered at risk.

Level 2 (Amber) – Be Alert

The following districts and Divisional Secretariat (DS) divisions have been issued a Level 2 Amber Warning, indicating the need to stay alert for possible landslides, rockfalls, and slope failures:

- Galle District: Nagoda, Elpitiya, Badddegama

- Kandy District: Yatinuwara

- Kegalle District: Kegalle, Mawanella, Yatiyantota, Aranayake, Dehiowita, Ruwanwella, Rambukkana

- Ratnapura District: Kalawana, Eheliyagoda, Ratnapura

Level 1 (Yellow) – Be Aware

The following areas have been issued a Level 1 Yellow Warning, advising residents to remain vigilant due to the potential for ground instability and localized landslides:

- Colombo District: Seethawaka, Padukka

- Galle District: Neluwa, Yakkalamulla

- Kalutara District: Ingiriya, Walallavita, Horana

- Kandy District: Deltota, Doluwa, Udunuwara, Udapalatha, Pathadumbara, Pathahewaheta, Gangawata Korale, Pasbage Korale, Ududumbara

- Kegalle District: Ruwanwella, Warakapola, Bulathkohupitiya, Galigamuwa

- Kurunegala District: Ridigama, Alawwa, Narammala, Mallawapitiya

- Matale District: Rattota, Yatawatta, Ukuwela, Pallepola, Laggala, Naula, Ambanganga Korale

- Matara District: Weligama

- Nuwara Eliya District: Ambagamuwa, Haguranketha, Walapane

- Ratnapura District: Imbulpe, Kiriella, Kuruwita, Ayagama, Pelmadulla

The NBRO urges residents in these regions to remain alert, particularly those living near hilly or landslide-prone areas, and to move to safer locations if signs of ground movement are observed.

Emergency response teams have been placed on standby, and the public is advised to follow updates from the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and local authorities.
