Global travel media giant Lonely Planet has named Jaffna among the Top 25 cities to visit in 2026, marking a significant milestone for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.

This prestigious international recognition reinforces Sri Lanka’s growing global appeal as a unique cultural and heritage-rich destination. The inclusion of Jaffna highlights its deep-rooted history, vibrant traditions, and the country’s ongoing efforts to promote regional tourism diversity.

The announcement was made during the official launch of the Italian edition of Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel 2026” guide on the 22nd in Milan. The event saw participation from the Sri Lanka Consulate General in Milan, representing the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau. The guide also features several exclusive culinary selections from the Northern Province, further showcasing the region’s authentic flavors.

Authorities believe this global recognition will serve as a powerful promotional tool to boost international tourist arrivals and strengthen community-based tourism initiatives across the island.
