The IGP made these remarks after meeting the Maha Nayaka Thera of the Ramanna Maha Nikaya.
He said the MP was provided with temporary police protection following the reported threats.
“It was revealed that the MP has certain links with individuals involved in organized crime. We are conducting an open investigation to determine the basis of these threats,” the IGP said.
He further noted that some individuals connected to organized crime and drug trafficking have already entered politics and are seeking to expand their influence at the national level.
The IGP emphasized that political parties have a responsibility to ensure that such individuals are not granted nominations and do not enter politics “wearing white attire” while engaging in organized crime and drug trafficking.
