In addition to sperm donation, the sperm bank at the Castle Street Women's Hospital has also started an Ova (egg) donation program for women who do not have eggs, hospital's director, Dr. Ajith Dantanarayana said.
Some women who are hoping to have children have their hopes dashed due to the lack of eggs that are active enough to bear a child, and the doctor said that the process here is to obtain eggs from women who have healthy eggs to fulfill those hopes.
The woman's eggs are then fertilized with the woman's husband's sperm in a special medium in the external environment, and the resulting embryo is implanted in the mother's uterus.
Dr. Dantanarayana said the initiative is designed to give hope to couples struggling with infertility, offering a scientific and safe pathway to parenthood.
