Hospital employees of the Maskeliya Regional Hospital staged a protest yesterday (25) morning, demanding police protection for the staff and inpatients following repeated assaults by intoxicated patients

According to hospital sources, some individuals who arrive at the hospital under the influence of alcohol have verbally and physically attacked hospital staff, including doctors, causing severe inconvenience and fear among employees and patients alike.

The protest was prompted by a recent incident on October 23, when a drunk person who came for treatment after being injured in an assault attacked a hospital employee on night duty. The injured employee is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.

The suspect, identified as a resident of the Moka Tea Estate, was arrested by the Maskeliya Police and later produced before the Hatton Magistrate’s Court.

Hospital staff have urged authorities to take immediate measures to ensure their safety and security during duty hours.
