Police opened fire at a van that ignored orders to stop at Golumadama Junction in Ratmalana last evening.

According to police, the van, which had travelled from Piliyandala via Moratuwa and Katubedda, failed to comply with instructions from officers of the Western South Traffic Division around 5.25 p.m. Officers pursued the vehicle and fired at its front and rear tyres near Belekkade Junction.

Despite the shots, the driver continued driving until reaching the Ratmalana railway station area, where he attempted to flee. He sustained minor facial injuries after falling and was subsequently admitted to Kalubowila Hospital before being arrested.

Investigations revealed that the suspect, a tourist-transport driver from Galkiriyagama, had endangered several vehicles along the route. Police further stated that the van is registered to a woman residing in Wellampitiya.
