SriLankan Airlines has responded to recent media reports regarding its financial performance for the 2024/25 fiscal year, emphasizing that the Group’s reported loss was largely influenced by a sharp reduction in foreign exchange gains.

The national carrier reported a Group loss of Rs. 2,735 million for 2024/25, a notable decline from the Rs. 7,925 million profit recorded in 2023/24. According to the airline, this difference was primarily due to lower exchange gains—Rs. 3,925 million this year compared to Rs. 26,717 million last year.

SriLankan Airlines explained that exchange gains arise from the revaluation of foreign currency-denominated liabilities. When the Sri Lankan Rupee appreciates, these revaluations generate accounting gains, which significantly impacted last year’s results.

Excluding the effects of currency fluctuations, the airline reported an operational loss of Rs. 6,660 million for 2024/25. While still a loss, this represents an improvement from the Rs. 18,792 million operational loss recorded in 2023/24 before exchange gains were accounted for.
