Heavy rainfall over the Walawe and Alikota Ara reservoir catchment areas has caused a rapid rise in water levels at both reservoirs.

As a result, three sluice gates of the Alikota Ara reservoir have been opened by two feet each, leading to a swift increase in water levels in the Kirindi Oya.

This situation has caused flooding on the Alikota Ara bridge along the Wewel Kadura–Walawe road, disrupting traffic in the area.

The Monaragala District Disaster Management Unit has urged the public to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel near the Kirindi Oya banks until the situation stabilizes.
