The Department of Meteorology says that the low-pressure area currently located over the southeast Bay of Bengal is continuing to intensify while moving northwestward towards Sri Lanka, resulting in increased rainfall across the island.

According to the latest forecast, the system is expected to further strengthen into a depression by tomorrow (25) and could develop into a cyclone by Monday (27 October).

Authorities expect the prevailing rainy weather conditions to continue until at least 28 October.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre reports that more than 20,000 people across 16 districts have already been affected due to the adverse weather conditions.
